Dedication of the New Welcome to Lebanon Monument
THE CITY THAT FRIENDLINESS BUILT TO DEDICATE NEW WELCOME MONUMENT
Mayor Paul Aziz invites the community and local media to the ribbon-cutting of Lebanon’s new Northside Welcome Monument at Academy Square on Thursday, May 30 at Noon.
The event will also include the unveiling of the monument’s strawberry-themed bronze plaque just prior to Lebanon’s Annual Strawberry Festival. Sculptor Heidi Wastweet, creator of the new art piece, will join Mayor Aziz for the unveiling.
The new monument was envisioned in early 2018 by an Academy Square neighborhood committee brought together by the City. The committee, working with Stangeland Landscape Architects, designed a welcome monument for the north end of town that would serve as an entrance to the downtown area. The monument’s art deco-themed design was inspired by downtown buildings and homes built during the early 1900s.
A second project planned for Academy Square in the coming Summer months will see the installation of new sidewalks and landscaping adjacent to Main Street (Highway 20), restoration of the old Santiam Academy monument and installation of a memorial to honor former Lebanon Mayor Ken Toombs, who passed away in 2018.
