This class includes time to reflect on and/or discuss life experiences, encourages embracing our emotions (positive and negative), and teaches strategies to learn from those experiences in order to set ourselves up for more positive outcomes in the future. The instructor is not a medical professional, but does use trauma-informed teaching practices in class. Students may participate in discussions at their own comfort level. Class is taught in English. Course structure The ARTiculate Journal (TAJ) consists of four classes over four weeks. Each class builds on skills and concepts learned in previous classes. TAJ is taught in-person at Cafe Rock every week, and participants are encouraged to practice at home between classes. The classes are organized into: • Passion & Purpose • Worry & Fear • Regret & Gratitude • Shame & Compassion Classes include the following format: • Icebreaker • Pos. Psych. Discussion • Art demonstration • Art activity/work time • A small take home assignment or challenge General principles of positive psychology: PERMA-V Classes in the first course will focus mainly on P, E, R, & M • Positive emotions – from pleasurable/interesting activities • Engagement – absorbed in activity because we’re good at it or we like it • Relationships – support, social, shared joy and pain, broad perspectives • Meaning – dedication ourselves to something greater than ourselves • Achievement – striving for success, setting goals, pushing to achieve them • Vitality – state of mind and body Writing & art techniques include: • Paper collage • One line drawing • Stencils, masks, and gelli printing • Blackout poetry & haiku • Peek-a-boos and pockets • Daily Dozen gratitudes
