Workplace Investigations

So, you’ve got a case of misconduct, or suspected misconduct, or conduct that may result in disciplinary action at the office….. what do you do? Undertake a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation. But first, consider that the investigation is likely to be second-guessed by an investigator, a plaintiff’s lawyer, a judge and/or a jury. And there is often a victim to consider as well. This informative 3 hour session will prepare you to meet this challenge head-on and help insulate your organization from liability that could result from the investigation, from the underlying misconduct, or from a retaliation claim. Join us for this lively, pratice-based discussion!

Jeff Burgess received his undergraduate education at the University of California at Santa Barbara where he recieved Bachelor of Arts degrees in Law and Society and Business Economics.  He received his legal education from the University of Mississippi School of Law.  After law school he worked in private law practice for 15 years, with an emphasis in litigation.  For most of the last 8 years, Jeff has been a case presenter with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI), taking Wage and Hour Division and Civil Rights Division cases to administrative hearing.  He has recently joined the Technical Assistance for Employers Program at BOLI where he teaches seminars in Oregon employment law. He also writes a newspaper column that is published throughout the state, edits handbooks for employers, and answers telephone and email inquiries about wage and hour and civil rights issues for the business community
